HILARY POWELL

I situate my installation practice within the derelict and abandoned sites of the city. Within these spaces I construct a form of "event architecture" in the creation of highly atmospheric environments. The final experience made through this process of intervention and invention in urban sites illuminates my belief i recycling not only of objects but of spaces, reconfiguring the cast-offs of society into magical new constellations.

Beginning with a research period on and around a particular site I compose with materials, lighting soundscapes and smell to create total extra sensory environments.
The process is part of a larger fascination with "junkspaces" and the various and conflicting programmes of urban reinvention. Practice and theory combine in my PHD in cultural studies at Goldsmiths College as I investigate these concerns and produce a highly visual documentary journey through these sites of imagination and their potential urban futures.
